Typewriter Database Report: 696 Maunufacturers, 844 Typewriter Galleries, 383 Typewriter Typefaces and 67 Typewriter Hunters!

Lots of new submissions to the Database this week - Richard Polt's been entering in many rarities (Sholes & Glidden, anyone?), and many new machines have been uploaded just today!

Yes, I said "383 Typefaces". That's right, a new page has been added, focusing on the typeface samples uploaded to the Database. Who'd'a thunk there'd be so many already?

Richard Polt also requested a way to search for Typewriter Hunter members, and I have obliged with another new page showing all Hunters by points score, and the 6 oldest machines they've entered. (had to fill up that white space somehow)

Right now, I’m still the highest-scoring hunter due to the photo and typesample-rich entries I’ve done, but Nick Beland is hot on my heels and I’m down to just one more typewriter to enter. I sense I will be toppled from the throne soon, now that there actually is a page that counts the scores. (:

That means I have 42 machines in my collection, including parts machines. 3 to 42 in 3 years. dang. That’s not even counting the ones that passed through my hands in that time. It only counts the ones I’ve kept. Seems like a lot. :P

Enjoy the new features!

  1. Excellent work good sir! New features hey>? Ohhhhhhh….. And I like the new features!

  2. Onward an upward. I’ll check out the new features!

  3. It’s so very, very excellent. :)

The search feature on the members and typefaces pages is very impressive, instant results without even hitting Return.

Request: Could we get an e-mail when someone comments on our typewriters? Or maybe an alert when we sign in to the site.

    1. on the front page, there are now little “comment” icons on every gallery listing where new comments have been posted since your last login. Since commenting on a gallery moves it to the top of the “50” list, this should be a good place to aggregate that notification.

I’m still debating having the database email a lot of notifications. I suspect it will eventually have to, in order to implement some ideas I have about flagging machines as “Parts Machine” or “For Sale or Trade”. There will have to be some method for facilitating direct contact between members, and single-blind email would probably work well (a ‘la CraigsList-style).

      1. Great, the comment icons are a good idea.

Maybe the e-mailing could be an opt-in (or opt-out), um, option.

  4. This is the only database I ever felt excited about!

  5. Great stuff, Ted! I really appreciate the new features, especially “Members.” I also like the “comment” icon; would you believe that until today, I didn’t even realize that you can actually leave comments?!

  6. I LOVE the database, thank you!!

    I will start contributing too!

  7. Nice! Nice, nice, nice! Your database is evolving great.
