  1. Amazing! The Thritin’ God and the Olympia deal, but mostly the great god of typewriters and photo gear that will likely haunt my dreams for days to come.

Send a little bit of Thriftin’ God love my way. It has been pretty dry on both fronts in my area.

  2. “Ep-pe, Pep-pe, Kak-ke! Hil-lo, Hol-lo, Hel-lo! Ziz-zy, Zuz-zy, Zik!”

There ya go, it’s either the magical Typewriter God blessing or it summons the flying monkeys. I forget which. (:

  3. I never find anything near that nice for such a low price at the thrifts around here. The pickings are really slim and way overpriced. You got a nice machine this time.

  4. Hooray! What a nice find! The unused cleaning set and instructions manual make it even better.

  5. Man… you get all the cheap machines over there.

  6. Great find!

Do you keep all these, or resell, or pass them on to deserving, typewriter-starved friends?

Why did they bother to put typewriters in zippered cases? The first time someone gets a little lazy or impatient, the zipper rips.

    1. a bit of each, depends on the machine. A nice, clean, reliable modern machine like this Olympia or a Galaxie sell like hotcakes here in town. Even, oddly enough, the SCM electric typebar machines that take spools sell well. These are the “pretty work-horses”, machines that are new enough that I can be confident will provide good service, and show well on the shelf.

Machines that have what I call “personality”, quirky defects, odd looks, etc., get kept or given away. Everyone I know who’s expressed the slightest interest in owning a typewriter gets one from that pool, which right now numbers about 5 machines.

Others I keep. I’m not much into Oly’s myself for typing, but I have one SM-7 I’ll keep, just because the touch is everything I wanted my Hermes 2000 to be (ya, odd way of explaining it, but there you are – the SM7 stayed and the H2k got given away).

  7. Pinhole? DSLR? Must be worth a try…

    1. I used an M42 macro ring capped with tinfoil & a pinhole poked in it. works pretty good, but it’s very telephoto.

  8. Score!
I think SoCal where I am is dry. A couple years ago I used to check all the Goodwills in like a 5 square city radius (???possible??) whatever. I was always 0-for-20 with maybe an electric Brother every other month.
So I stopped checking Goodwills… but I still get tempted and for a few nanoseconds I think about stopping and walking in but I still haven’t. How are Salvation Army stores? I’ve only been to one and didn’t have any luck.

    1. The only Salvation Amy stores we have are out in Tempe & Phoenix, pretty far out of my patrol area. I’ve hit them a few times over the years, but have never seen anything there I wanted. The guys in the thrift shopper forum also seem to have a low opinion of the SA – something about employees being able to cherry-pick the stock, i think.

  9. Ted, your dedication to thrifting is truly humbling. I wish I had more time for it., but that’s why you get these fantastic finds. It might just inspire me to get out to the stores a little more.

    1. perhaps a bit of an obsession lately once I added cameras to the want list. I prolly oughta give someone else a chance, though. (:
