SII cartridge, way too big, and full of too much tape. Also, feed core is just wrong enough to not work.

Too unevenly wrapped. The ribbon develops folds. Solved the problem by cutting up thr snap-on part of the cartridge to rovide a flat surface at the bottom end of the spool core. That worked perfectly.

  1. If you have any use for Selectric I ribbons, I’ve got a ton.

    1. Oooh, actually yes. Professor C tells me that the Type 71 SI ribbons will drop right into a Composer. Just couldn’t try it because all my SI’s are 721 cloth-ribbon eaters. :D

      Whatchoo want for a box?

  2. I never tire of seeing a Composer’s output! It’s really nice to see what Journal actually looks like in print. I thought it looked too much like Times, but seeing it in print for real it’s rather pleasant.

    1. The differences between the Roman typefaces are subtle, and yes it struck me as odd that there were so many Roman faces offered for the Composer. It often seems like a matter of “mood” until you blow ’em up to larger sizes – and that happened commonly back in the old pre-DTP typesetting days. Headlines were typed at 12 point then photographically enlarged to 24 or 48 point, then pasted into the layout mechanical.

Journal seems more old-style than Times, relaxed and artsy. The Aldine Roman seems more classical and feminine. Press Roman seems to be the one closest to Times in its generic feel.
