UJTU: Homes designed by Ettore Sottsass, a Typosphere Blog goes away, and a taste of Politics…

ettore-1

I saw this article in my newsfeed today, and it surprised me to find that Italian typewriter designer Ettore Sottsass had designed houses too, with over 20 homes in his portfolio. I figured this would be an article that Ton Sison would dig, so I went to his blog (i dream lo-tech) to post it for him to read, and guess what I found…idlt-1Yup, we’ve lost one of the great early Typosphere blogs, apparently some time ago, and we didn’t even notice. What happened? I dunno. I hope Ton’s ok, maybe off on some important adventure, I hope. It’s one thing to have a Typosphere blog fall off the update list because of inactivity, but to have it completely vanish is a great loss. I do miss Ton’s content and conversations, and I do hope we hear from him soon..

The New Hampshire Primaries closed tonight, and I’m a really happy guy. I don’t normally wear my politics in the blog, and I’m not going to do so in any really annoying way, but here’s a sneak peek at my dream election:

trumpsandersYeah, if the NH Primaries are any kind of indication of what we’ll see in the general election, It’s gonna be one of those once-in-a-lifetime political shows where instead of a choice between 2 evils you just can’t care about, you get all the absurd entertainment of a completely ridiculous clown getting beat like a gong by a guy who actually has a good chance at making this country a better, fairer place to live.

Which is which? Well, I’m sure you can figure it out.

  1. Hopefully Ton will reappear on WordPress. Enjoyed the political analysis! ;)

  2. Bernie needs an orange comb-over and a necktie!

I like your political analysis, it’s going to be interesting.

Speaking of dead blogs, I have two that haven’t been updated in several years. One was my grandson’s, before he became an aloof teenager, while the other was a failed attempt at a venue whete I could post random digital photod. I think that’s why they invented Instagram.

  3. I noticed Ton has quit updating his blog some time ago. Not sure if it is one I took out of my links on my blog or not. Over the past year or 2 we’ve lost about 50% or Typoshperians who used to be active bloggers. What happened? I do not know. I’ve only kept in touch with Adwoa as she is doing fine moving on to more adventures.

Oh, yea. Politics. I’ve chosen not to post about them, but this year is very tempting to start. Congrats to the winners.

  4. It takes a big commitment to keep a blog going and understand why some people stop doing it. I really appreciate all the work you put into yours.

  5. I noticed a while ago that Ton’s blog was gone. He told me he’s focusing on earning tenure. Don’t see why he had to take down the whole blog, though!

It is shaping up to be an interesting election year, that’s for sure. Don’t bet on Bernie, though:

  6. I am sorry to hear about the demise of i dream lo-tech. I hope he archives it somewhere so other typewriter enthusiasts may use it for reference.

On a side note, I was a little confused by the headline in the article screenshot: “…Memphis Legend Ettore Sottsass”. Did Elvis and Ettore Sottsass have something in common?? I did a little research and read about the Memphis design group which one snarker described as “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price”. Ha!

    1. Ha! now there’s a rule-iffic description. :D

  7. I also bet that Bernie owns a typewriter.

  8. Sadly I observe that the price of typewriters is trending strongly upwards, even as the stock market tanks. Thus one concludes that the cost and difficulty of maintaining a strictly typewriter based blog is rising accordingly. But it is important to remember that in the end, he or she who has the most typewriters wins, blog of not!
As for the next POTUS; Canada has a semi-talented ex-prime minister who is both a conservative, and yet by US standards a left-wing liberal. Come and get Stephen Harper! At least he has a brain, and experience in government.

  9. Richard Mohlman recently asked me about a could of typewriters that someone was offering to him as a bulk lot. He showed me some photos, and I immediately recognised them as some items from Ton’s collection. This was about 6 months ago, and I had an inkling at that time that he’d had enough.

From what I can tell he’s whittled down most of his collection, and just hung onto a handful of items. Fair enough I guess. He had a great blog, and I have missed it.
