I have yet to try a Golden Touch, but the 50’s underwood portables I have don’t measure up to the QDL’s of the same period. The Aristocrat is better still, in the way an Olds is better than a Chevy – though nearly identical in manufacture, there’s just something better about the feel.
I just found my grandfather’s Underwood golden touch portable from about the same time as this one. It’s not exactly the same, but they really look alike. I would like to operate it but I’m not really sure how, and i wouldn’t like to do something that i couldn’t fix. Would you happen to have a manual for it , or an instruction book or anything that could help me? Thanks!
I have an Underwood Jewell Golden Touch portable that I used in college more than 50 years ago. It has not been used since, but is in excellent shape. I can’t find the serial number in the database. How do I determine manufactured year an value?
Both are nice typewriters. If I had to choose between the 2 I’d pick the Royal even though I really like Underwood typewriters.

Fun comparison, I look forward to more. I think I’d agree that the feel of the QDL gives it a certain edge.

Luckily, I have not one but TWO instruction manuals for the underwood portables of this period:
