  1. Wow! What a roller coaster. I hope things do settle for you and Tori and the summer is enjoyable and productive.

My vote on the typewriters, The ’49 QDL one of my favorites and on my want list for several months. One day one will follow me home.

  2. Gee, Rev, I thought it was just me who was having a crappy April/May. Sorry to hear of your ups and downs. I hope your ups are really high and your downs not too low, in future.

Regarding “The Maltese Falcon”, you may find Hammett’s writing style more Hemingwayesque than Chandler’s. Still, while I’ve always preferred Hammett’s plotting, I’ve always liked Chandler’s style. “He made words dance”, somebody once wrote.

  3. I read The Maltese Falcon last summer and was impressed with how close it was to the film — just what you said about The Big Sleep (which I’ve really got to read because I’ve always been baffled by the plot of the movie).

Here’s wishing you a summer full of ups — or at least a nice, smooth, mellow, even time.

  4. best wishes for a smoother ride on the roller coaster of life. Hammett visited Tacoma a couple times and he even mentions the city in The Maltese Falcon.
    p.s. Does the radio play?

  5. The Royal Swinger and the Silver-Seiko are variants of the radio-less Caravan. I’m not surprised that it’s a decent typer, my faux bois Caravan has a very good feel.

  6. Chandler was the better writer in my view, but even he couldn’t explain some of his plots! Maybe you could get an AM transmitter device for an iPod like the ones they have to broadcast into car radios. Or if you could swap the radio part our for an old am/fm transistor one..think of the possibilities then! Your typewriter could play podcasts, or anything you want to.
