Possibly the most convoluted, obtuse and pointlessly time-consuming method for typecasting ever devised by a Typospherian! :D

Now there's a paper puncher that really has only one use.

Yay! 30 year old inks! The yellow was dried up, but the process red & cyan were good enough to run. A bit thick and viscous, though. Might have been the cause of some of the ink sticking to the image problem.

First plate - medium etch, not bad, but some places the ink didn't stick., so next plate I tried light etch, thinking maybe I'd rubbed the letters off, but light etch was way worse. Conclusion: these plates like hot, heavy etch. I'll try that next time.

  1. Smashing stuff. How brilliant to have the complete kit! Looking forward to seeing more of these convoluted typecasts.

  2. That is really cool. I also like that you named it Mothra. Do you have to sing to it to wake it up?

    1. I did in fact have to sing to it to wake it up, many colourful and beautiful songs of great complexity and power. Miniature Japanese girls are optional, I suppose.

  3. Glad to see you got the spacing working properly. The justification is pretty straightforward once everything is working properly. The Justification Tube should reset to 0 each time you do a carriage return. Then, as you type across the page, the tube subtracts the spaces you’ve used, showing the remaining spaces to the right margin. You then set the Dial to the number on the Justification Tube and then re-type the line. The machine automatically adds the correct extra spacing between the words to make the line end exactly at the right margin. Piece of cake!

  4. Next stop: a technicolour reproduction of the Magna Carta!

  5. This method shows true dedication.

    I love Pyramid!

  6. I’d kill for a clean copy of the Theme typeface range

    1. Heh, well everything involving maintaining this machine is a struggle, especially finding spare parts. After a year of searching, I managed to find a fellow in Ireland who had a spare Composer drive belt – so soon it’ll be back running. However, I did manage to do a typecast with the 11-Point Theme ball:
