I believe that typewriter is just cursed at this point, forever doomed to cause pain & suffering for whoever tries to repair it. I had fun attempting to fix it at least, & That’s all that matters in the end!

Ah, so much nonlove for the RNPs. Yet they sold by the hundreds of thousands. Did people in the Depression know something we don’t? My own RNP7 is not the most flawless or crisp typer, yet it can go very fast, and though “noiseless” is an exaggeration, its noise is much less obnoxious than that of a conventional machine.
I’m sure when brand new, with all those odd leather and rubber bits still fresh and supple, they were probably pretty nice. Time is not kind to them and nobody so far has picked up the need for replacement soft bits critical to these things performing as new. /:
