Currently in the Eyeholes: Le Samouraï (Typewriter Sighting!)

Rest in peace, Alain Delon – It was a real dick move to request that your *still alive* dog be buried with you, but thankfully your family didn’t do that, and now all you’ve got is a stain on your legacy. That said, I still like Le Samouraï, and watched it again tor the typewriter sightings. I recalled a room full of typewriters, and sure enough – the police station is full of shiny, new Olivetti Diaspron 82‘s.
A note on the plot; considering how careful Jef was in disposing of the gloves, gun and car he used in the first hit, it makes no sense that he wouldn’t also change out the distinctive overcoat and hat he wore. The overcoat at least would have been covered in gunpowder residue, and it’s the getup that gets him recognized and picked up by the police, and causes all the trouble he gets into. Sure, the getup is the coolest thing since cool was invented, but sheesh – do the job in a burner coat & hat, eh?

If you like this, also try out Jim Jarmusch’s “Ghost Dog“. Not really a remake, but very much the same sort of story. Very Recommend! (:

  1. Ghost Dog is one of my absolute favorite movies! So good. Jarmusch directed another favorite movie, Stranger Than Paradise, starring one of my favorite jazz musicians, John Lurie of the Lounge Lizards. Discovered them on a late-80’s show on VH1 called New Visions. They played all the music videos that weren’t in the regular rotation. Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, Kitaro, Chet Baker, Jane Siberry, Bela Fleck, Laurie Anderson, and so many others. Very eclectic. Which explains my musical tastes now.

    1. Ooh, I’ve got “Stranger than Paradise”, it’s on my watch list! Weirdly, I got “Ghost Dog” on VHS back when I did one of those mail-in Columbia House 10 tapes for a dollar things. Came with “Last Man Standing” (also good) and “Alien Resurrection” (third favorite Alien film) :D
