Some of Gunier’s recommendations to me, minus “Dr. Strangelove” which I already had. I’ve seen them all, but on network and cable TV back when those were relevant, so it’ll be fun to revisit them. What’ll be new is the 1965 cut of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” – apparently the “Coke Commercial” version that was edited down for the 1966 and later broadcasts. (:
Glad my letter got to you OK!
Of course you’ve already seen a my recommendations. I forget how much of a film nut you are! When you do get around to re-watching them, do tell me what you think!
Well, that’s one of the things about network TV in the 70’s/80’s – you had like 3 to 8 channels of various quality tiers, usually 3-4 big networks and a Public station or two (PBS), maybe a college station or two and very occasionally a rogue independent station if you were in a big city. They’d play any movie they could license, and pretty much everybody in the city or country (if on one of the Big 3) would see it due to lack of choice in other things to watch, so you could get a lot of variety over the years in what you got to see on TV, and there’d be a strong communal/societal absorption of those movies.
These days, there’s a firehose of “content”, but very little of it sticks to everyone. It’s all about feeding your niche now.
