There’s a free type-in/paper arts event in Los Angeles, and you’re invited. The event is Saturday, February 9, noon-4pm at Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth, a restored 1927 theater near MacArthur Park in Los Angeles.
A traditional type-in is basically an excuse for typewriter enthusiasts to get together and nerd out over writing machines. This is intended to go beyond our usual typewriter fan base and reach anyone interested in the paper and letter arts with a hands-on, DIY-style riff on Valentine’s Day cards.
- There will be a couple dozen fun vintage typewriters on hand, some with cursive typefaces and festive pink or red ribbons, for people to compose Valentine’s greetings. Use one of ours, or bring your own machine to show off and share.
- The International Printing Museum will bring a small press and some Valentine’s Day cuts to perform printing demos. They’ll bring blank stock for people to type or write on, which they’ll run through the printer to create truly custom cards.
- Ars Poetica will have two poets in attendance to compose haikus for people on demand, engage in spoken word performance and other literary hijinks.
- Letterpress artists Two Hand Design, Kiss and Punch and Fugu Fugu will be in attendance with fun, whimsical love-themed cards.
- Calligraphers from the Society for Calligraphy will be on site to help address or write cards for people, with perfect penmanship.
- Tiny Telegrams will bring their ridiculously adorable, handmade (and appropriately named) Tiny Telegrams.
- Rubber stamp artists will demonstrate their surprisingly complex craft, and possibly have items for sale.
This event is free to attend, and free to exhibit/be a vendor.

Ted!
Thanks for posting this. Fingers crossed for a good turnout—we’ve had a lot of interest, so with luck we’ll have a fun time and be primed to try this again.
Cheers!
