  1. Nobody does instruction manual illustrations like that anymore. Thanks for this, Ted. I don’t understand it all yet, but something tells me it’ll come in very handy someday. Provided they apply to the ’45 Sterling and ’56 Silent Super. Looks like they do. Thanks again!

    1. actually, the 5-series book is the second part of two books, where the first covers the flattop and Speedline models (1-series thru 4-series). I’m scanning that one too, so this pdf will cover every portable (aside from the Skyriter/Zepyr) from the 1930’s to the early 60’s. I also have the 6-series book that is also headed for the scanner, so coverage will extend out to Galaxies and others from the 60’s and 70’s.

  2. Thanks Ted! These are a treasure trove of information. I believe they will be useful for a Skyriter also.

  3. Oooh! Can’t wait to see the whole document!

  4. They truly are hi res files! Do you think any of these adjustments would affect the head strike impact noise? One of my nicest SC5’s is too loud to use!

    1. dunno, seems like it might, assuming the typeslug is hitting the wrong place on the platen or is set to strike too hard. I would suspect a hard platen, though.

  5. I thought that there had to be a way to do this… thanks for scanning it! My Smith-Corona portables will be getting a touch control boost soon! The whole PDF should be interesting.

  6. TED

I prchased The four series manual from you. On page 9 references and adjustment manual PS 4885 would you happen to have a manual as well

    1. the 1-4 Series, 5 Series and the related parts manuals are all included in the printed “Floating Shift” Bible:

I don’t yet have the parts manual available as PDF.
